Confirmation

2011-2012 Confirmation NEWS

We give thanks that, in the short term, Faith members Steve and Carla Ringer have volunteered to oversee the youth ministry (both high school and confirmation), with assistance from the Youth Team. The Church Council is prayerfully considering how to proceed to meet staffing needs for youth ministry.

FAQ: "What is Confirmation?"

Answer: "When children are baptized into our faith tradition, we make a promise before God to place in their hands the Holy Scriptures and provide for their instruction into the Christian faith, that, living in the covenant of their Baptism and in communion with the Church, they may lead godly lives until the day of Jesus Christ (LBW). Confirmation is the affirmation of our Baptism."

Youth are encouraged to attend Confirmation classes throughout their 7th and 8th grade school years.  These classes are taught by Pastor Jean and our youth leaders who will be happy to answer any questions you may have about Faith's confirmation program.

Confirmation Program 2011-2012 Requirements, 7th and 8th Grade

Class Times

Confirmation Class will be held from 9:15 a.m. to 10:20 a.m. on the 2nd, 4th and 5th Sundays in the Youth Room and 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the 2nd Wednesday.

There are times when there are changes in the regular schedule. Please see the calendar for details.

Attendance:

Two absences are allowed. After two absences the student must make arrangements to make-up any materials missed.

Worship:

We pray that parents will encourage their youth to attend worship beyond the “required” number of Sundays. However, 7th and 8th grade students are required to attend 20 worship services between September 4, 2011 and September 3, 2012. Services other than Sunday morning that are included are: Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Mid-week services in Lent are NOT included.

Note: There will be no Sunday morning class for 7th and 8th graders on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month. Youth will be serving as acolytes and communion assistants at the 9:15 a.m. service on those Sundays on a rotating basis.

During Advent and Lent, when Holy Communion is held weekly at 9:15 a.m. worship, the youth who is assigned as an acolyte on a 2nd, 4th, or 5th Sunday will be excused from class that day; the communion assistant will attend class, but leave early to assist in worship.

Note: Sermon summaries will only be required if it is apparent to the Pastor or Youth Leaders that a youth is not paying attention during the service/sermon.

Fellowship Activities:

There are three scheduled; youth are required to attend at least two of these activities.

Easter Breakfast, April 8, 2012

All 7th and 8th grade youth are required to help set-up for and/or serve the Easter Breakfast. Exceptions will be made only in the case of illness or if the youth’s family is out of town.

Group Service Projects:

Two group service projects will be planned on a second Wednesday in Advent and in Lent. All 7th and 8th grade youth are required to help at both service projects. In the case of absence, the youth will be required to do a project that is approved by the Youth Leaders.

Extended Community Building:

Two retreats are held each year for the 7th and 8th graders. These events are such a great opportunity that youth will not want to miss them! Attendance at one of these events is required.

Homework:

There will be a limited amount to memory work each year (Books of the Bible, Apostle’s Creed, Lord’s Prayer, Ten Commandments, and the Definition of a Sacrament). Students are required to recite these items from memory with minimal errors. There will be no quizzes unless it is apparent that they are needed to help the youth focus.

Acolyte Duty Requirement:

7th and 8th graders serve as acolytes and communion assistants at the 9:15 a.m. worship service on Communion Sundays throughout the year (see “Worship” for details) and also at some special services. A rotating schedule is developed. If a student is unable to carry out the duties on a scheduled date, a replacement must be found. This is the student’s responsibility. Please call the church office and give the name of the individual who will be taking the youth’s place.
